The Eating Disorder Program offers treatment to individuals and their families who are experiencing problems with normal eating, weight and body image.
Treatment in this program involves a two-track approach. The first is geared to the normalization of eating and the stabilization of weight in order to eliminate the effects of starvation or chaotic eating patterns as they can drastically alter personality. The second is focused on addressing the underlying issues that contribute to the onset and maintenance of the disordered eating.
In addition to treating individuals and families with disordered eating, our program promotes healthy eating, active living and self-acceptance. This is difficult for some of us, especially adolescents

The name “Smith Clinic has been well-known in Thunder Bay for a long time. Even after being re-named in 1997 to “The Sister Margaret Smith Centre,” our building is still known by its old name. Unfortunately, when people use the old name, they assume that nothing has changed her in all that time, that we are still doing things the way we were doing them 20 years ago. Our program has changed quite a bit since the name change, along with our staff, and our philosophy of service.
Our mission at the Sister Margaret Smith Centre (in cooperation with the Balmoral Withdrawal Management Centre) is to assist people make healthy change in their lives by providing individuals and loved ones with accessible, comprehensive service. Some of these include: gender-specific day and residential intensive treatment, outreach, community treatment groups, and withdrawal management services. It takes courage to ask for help, and we appreciate that. Knowing this, we have become a “client centered” agency, which means that we use a variety of treatment approaches and resources based on the individual needs of each client.
“Courage is not the lack of fear. It is acting in spite of it.” – Mark Twain.

The Sister Margaret Smith Centre promotes a holistic approach to the treatment, education and prevention of problem gambling. Services are free and confidential.
Recreational gambling requires an understanding of the characteristics of low-risk gambling, as well as the signs of a gambling problem. Gambling counsellors are able to assist you in identifying responsible gambling behaviours and recognizing the warning signs of problem gambling.
For most people, gambling is a social or recreational activity, something that is fun and entertaining. But for others, gambling causes problems and for some it becomes uncontrollable. Everyone, including social gamblers, would benefit by knowing how to set limits and learning the warning sign of problem gambling.
If you are wondering if your life would be a little better if you or a loved one gambled less, contact the Gambling Program.
