Taboos, once associated with seeking the assistance of a therapist, are fast evaporating and many of us are now less reluctant to obtain professional assistance for personal problems we may be experiencing. Certainly, modern day life is very taxing for most of us and catchwords like ‘burn out’, ‘road rage’, and ‘stressed out’ are common colloquial terms. In response, therapists are attempting to address and assist us with these new age psychological dilemmas by providing counselling strategies that are more user friendly. More recently, practitioners have been endorsing and administering forms of treatment that are more brief in duration, integrative, open-minded, self-directed and generally more in keeping with twenty-first century psychological theory.
Therapists of today attempt to guide and direct clients toward a better understanding of how they are not only influenced and affected by negative life events and occurrences but also how they may even create and maintain dysfunctional patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.
At the Personal Development Centre, the various therapeutic approaches we utilize, now, more than ever, emphasize client responsibility and direct involvement in the planning and course of treatment. Brief, integrative, and self-directed are the therapeutic catchwords that are replacing the more nondirective and passive, psychoanalytic and person-centered types of approaches of the not too distant past.
Research-based practices and therapies of the present are easier for both client and therapist to understand and implement. Now, CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy), Solution-Focused Relationship Therapy, REBT (rational emotive behaviour therapy) and Anger Management Therapy are just a few of the more modern forms of “tailor made for modern life” forms of psychological therapies being used and more readily understood by both consumer and purveyor.
In the new millennium, being psychologically healthier is becoming as important as being physically fit. Psychotherapy or counselling can be a useful tool for those of us who quest for a healthier emotional state of existence.
