Philosophy of Program

The Personal Development Centre offers innovative, progressive and comprehensive programs for clients with mental health issues and needs, who reside in our community and the outlying region. We provide direction and leadership for our community in the development of a continuum of mental health services and endeavour to cultivate strong community partnerships.

In our program, we are committed to the provision of quality client care and strive to empower clients to achieve emotional wellness, to provide a community-based alternative to medical treatment, and to meet the ever changing needs in our community. Our clinical services utilize modern assessment, intervention and treatment strategies based on principles of best practice.

Access to Program

Client’s must be 18 years of age and older to access the services of the Personal Development Centre. In accordance with the Public Hospital Act, physician referrals are required for acceptance into the program. In conjunction with the physician referral, other referrals from a variety of community agencies and hospital based services are accepted.

Assessment

Upon admission to the program, clients are scheduled for a comprehensive intake assessment to help identify the presenting and underlying mental health issues. From there, in partnership with clients, an individualized treatment program is formulated, based on the client’s personal goals and assessed needs. Clients are assessed from a holistic perspective, considering their bio/psycho/social/spiritual functioning. Assessment is an ongoing process, starting with the initial assessment and continuing throughout the treatment process. Assessment tools can include observation, structured interviews, and psychometric evaluation.

Referrals to Other Agencies

Clients may be referred to other internal programs (i.e. Eating Disorder Program, Addictions Services) or external agencies if required (i.e. Family Services, TBRHSC Community Mental Health Program and Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital)
